Non-geographic telephone numbers are a special kind of telephone numbers, which are also considered to be as telemarketing numbers. In the United Kingdom, non-geographic numbers are phone numbers obtainable for private sale, which rather than being assigned to a particular phone line or circuit, provide callers with a contact number which gives no clue about the geographical location of the caller.
The owner of the number can retarget the non-geographic number to any other telephone number including international, mobile, and even other non-geographic numbers at any time, hence, enabling them to take their calls on the move or at different locations at different times, or simultaneously. Non-geographic numbers which cost more than 50p (United Kingdom) to call are classed as premium rate numbers and usually begin with 09.

Non geographic numbers are very useful for those people who travel within a country frequently, because these numbers have free roaming capability within a country where a non geographic number is issued. In the UK, the NGNs with 08 prefix are widely used with the call costs, usually ranging from 0.50p/min - 10p/min. The 0845 is a lo-call type NGN, which is good for businesses as it costs the long distance callers the same as a local call, while 0871 is another NGN, usually popular for telemarketing, which charges the caller extra than usual.
Personal non-geographic telephone numbers go by many names such as call shield, follow me, and personal numbers. The great benefit about this type of telephone number is that it provides its clients with just one telephone number, but has that number routed to any other number according to the wish of the client.
Usually, these non-geographic numbers come in handy for businesses but are rarely used for personal and individual use. Yet, they can prove to be very convenient for travellers as the NGN can be made to target a cellular phone; thus, NGN can provide country-wide unlimited roaming to the subscriber.
With many pre-paid calling cards, calls to non-geographic numbers are blocked. Either the United Kingdom partner does not connect the incoming call or the calling card provider does not accept the charge taxed by the United Kingdom operator.
